For my birthday I went to one of my favourite spots in Mauritius — the Red Roof Church in Cap Malheureux — and discovered a brand new seafood restaurant right across the road. It’s called Chill Out Restaurant, and the location is incredible. For my birthday this year, I decided to do something simple… good seafood, a beautiful view, and one of my favourite spots in the whole of Mauritius. If you know the island, you’ll know the Red Roof Church in Cap Malheureux. It’s one of those places that never gets old. The view across the water to Coin de Mire is just spectacular. I’ve been there many times, but this time I discovered something new.Right across the road there’s a restaurant that’s only been open for a few months called Chill Out Restaurant. It’s not the usual ā€œfeet in the sandā€ beach shack like Lakaz Sandrine or Chez Clauddio. This one is a bit more of a relaxed sit-down restaurant but they also have tables overlooking the ocean, and honestly the setting is beautiful. Cool shade, a gentle sea breeze, and that famous view right in front of you.But the best part… the seafood. While we were sitting there, you could literally see fishermen just down the beach cleaning their catch. In fact, the chef actually walked across to the fishermen to fetch our fish. You really can’t get fresher than that.We tried Mauritian lobster, prawns with garlic sauce, crispy beef with sweet chilli, and a whole red snapper. The lobster had this natural sweetness that the chef explained comes from the lagoon and the coral reefs where they feed. Whatever the reason… it was incredible. And the chef himself, Atish, was fascinating to chat to. He worked on cruise ships for about 20 years before deciding he’d had enough of the constant movement and wanted to open something of his own here in Mauritius. You can tell he loves what he does. The dessert was something else entirely… honestly plated like something out of a Michelin star kitchen. And then to finish the day, we wandered back across to the fruit lady who sits near the church. She makes the most amazing homemade ice cream. Pineapple, passion fruit, lemon… proper tropical flavours. Simple birthday. Beautiful place. Amazing seafood. If you’re visiting the north of Mauritius, this is definitely a spot worth stopping for. ... See MoreSee Less
