India travel tips for first-time visitors! I travelled solo to Bangalore (Bengaluru), India, at 51. Here are 10 things I wish I'd known about solo female travel in India, safety, costs, food and transport. Before travelling to India for the first time, I'd heard all the warnings. People told me to be careful, asked whether I was brave enough to travel alone, and made me wonder what I'd got myself into! But India surprised me in ways I never expected. I felt much safer exploring Bengaluru than I'd imagined. I discovered fantastic restaurants, travelled comfortably in air-conditioned Ubers and experienced a modern, fascinating side of India that rarely appears in the budget travel videos. Of course, some things were more complicated than expected! From withdrawing cash at Indian ATMs and making UPI payments to understanding the Indian e-Visa process, there were a few lessons I wish I'd learnt before arriving. In this video, I share 10 things every first-time visitor to India should know, based on my own experience travelling independently as a woman over 50. Whether you're planning a holiday in India, considering solo female travel or simply curious about what Bangalore is really like, I hope my experiences help you travel with more confidence. Have you visited India? What surprised you most? Tell me in the comments! What is a typical shopping mall in India really like? Come shopping with me as I explore an Indian mall, discover local and international shops, try delicious Indian food and visit a supermarket. I'm visiting Mantri Square Mall in Bengaluru (Bangalore), India, to see what an everyday shopping experience is like. At first, it all seems surprisingly familiar. There's H&M, Burger King, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Domino's and plenty of international brands. But there are also Indian clothing stores, traditional outfits, interesting prices and a few things I certainly wasn't expecting. After exploring the shops and food court, I head into Punjab Grill for lunch, where I discover fantastic Indian food, including delicious chicken tikka, chutneys and a few surprises. The food is wonderful, and the service is something else! Then it's time to explore SPAR Hypermarket, an Indian supermarket where I discover all sorts of unfamiliar foods, masala-flavoured snacks, unusual grocery products and a shopping experience that doesn't quite go according to plan. How different is shopping in India compared with other countries? What do Indian supermarkets sell? Are shopping malls in India expensive? And what is the food like? Join me for a relaxed look at everyday life in India, where even something as ordinary as visiting a shopping mall can turn into an adventure. Exploring India in Bengaluru (Bangalore)! Visit Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace, Bangalore Fort, ancient Hindu temples and Bangalore Palace, with real sightseeing costs and tips for exploring the city I booked an Uber Rentals private car and driver for four hours, planned my sightseeing route and thought I had everything organised. **The cost was ₹1,390 for four hours**, which seemed like a fantastic way to explore the city without worrying about transport between attractions. You can even add your planned sightseeing stops directly in the Uber app. Well, India had other ideas! First, I couldn't find breakfast because everything seemed to open late. Then my Uber driver cancelled my carefully planned booking, and suddenly all my saved stops disappeared. But once I finally reached Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace, things became much more interesting. **Entrance to Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace cost ₹250 for foreign visitors.** I booked my ticket online in advance, and unlike some other Indian booking websites I'd tried, this one accepted my international bank card! Official Archaeological Survey of India ticket booking: https://asi.paygov.org.in/asi-webapp/ Inside the palace, I met an enthusiastic local guide who introduced me to its fascinating history, beautiful teak architecture and the story of Tipu Sultan, including his battles against the British and his pioneering rocket technology. The guide offered to show me around for a donation. I really enjoyed his enthusiasm and knowledge, so I gave him ₹500. Unfortunately, he wasn't satisfied and asked for another ₹500! Something worth knowing if you visit — agree on a price before accepting a guided tour. Next came an unexpected visit to an ancient Hindu temple, where I removed my shoes, explored the beautiful stone carvings and even received a blessing. From there, I visited **Bangalore Fort, which is completely free to enter.** The enormous surviving walls and impressive entrance give you a glimpse of just how important this fort once was. You can also walk between the fort and Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace if you prefer to explore on foot. Then it was back into the air-conditioned car for a drive through the colourful, busy streets of old Bengaluru, past markets, tiny roads and plenty of traffic! I also made a brief stop outside Bangalore Palace, with its architecture inspired by Windsor Castle. I didn't go inside, but it was interesting to see such a different style of palace in India. By the time my sightseeing trip ended, I'd actually only used **2 hours and 15 minutes of my four-hour Uber booking and travelled approximately 15 km.** And despite all my careful planning, things had turned out very differently from what I expected. This is what I'm discovering about travelling in India. Sometimes the best experiences happen when you stop expecting everything to follow your carefully prepared plan! Exploring Bangalore (Bengaluru), India, as a solo female traveller! From the famous Lalbagh Botanical Garden to a traditional Andhra Bhojanam meal at Nandhini Deluxe, this day was full of unexpected discoveries. I had a wonderful day planned, starting with Bangalore's hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus. Well, that didn't quite work out! After trying to figure out how to buy tickets and when the bus actually operated, I decided to change plans and explore Bengaluru another way. My first stop was Lalbagh Botanical Garden, a beautiful 240-acre green space right in the middle of Bangalore. There are enormous ancient trees, a 3-billion-year-old rock, a historic glasshouse and even a 270-year-old mango tree. The only problem? I kept getting lost, and quite a few places I wanted to explore were closed! After all that walking, I was starving, so I headed to Nandhini Deluxe to experience traditional Andhra cuisine. I ordered the Andhra Non Veg Meals (₹550), a traditional Andhra Bhojanam served on a banana leaf. What arrived was an incredible spread of rice, biryani, chicken curry, chicken kebab, rasam, sambar, curd and other delicious accompaniments. Some of it was seriously spicy! Fortunately, the wonderful restaurant staff helped me figure out how to eat everything properly. I even learned about the Indian tradition of folding your banana leaf towards or away from yourself when you've finished eating. And then I discovered what might just be the Indian secret to surviving all that spicy food: curd and lime soda! Along the way, I share some practical experiences of travelling independently around India, including: - Getting around Bangalore using Uber and auto rickshaws - Visiting Lalbagh Botanical Garden - Cash, UPI payments and international bank cards - Discovering authentic Andhra food in Bengaluru - The little challenges and surprises of solo travel in India The day ended with a visit to a Scottish pub, a Bangalore rainstorm and an unexpected dinner back at my hotel. Travelling solo isn't always about having everything perfectly organised. Sometimes the best discoveries happen when your original plans completely fall apart.
