Mauritius – all inclusive, half board or full board?

So, a question that comes up regularly is how to experience Mauritius? Should I go full board? Is half board ok? It seems from people who’ve been here a few times there’s a consensus. I’m gonna talk you through it

The most commonly asked question is do I go all inclusive, full board or half board. This is going to depend on a couple of things obviously your budget being a major one. Each hotel or resort is a bit different so you can’t say for sure exactly what is the right answer. There are a few tricks though.

Check the map

The 1st thing you need to do is head on to the map. Look at the map see where the hotel is. If there’s a town nearby then chances are you’ll be able to get food outside of the hotel easily. If your resort is in a remote area it’s going to likely cost more to take a taxi to get to a restaurant then paying the extra for the full board.

Be sure to check on satellite mode so that you can actually see where there is a town. Also look at the roads because some places might seem nearby, But are quite difficult to access possibly because of a mountain or river.

Price of food and drinks in Mauritius

It is important to note that Mauritius has a variety of different foods from very cheap street foods all the way up to fine dining.

As the a rough estimate you can get a quality homemade beef Burger with chips and a drink at a restaurant for under 500 rupees per person. There are also a lot of restaurants that offer a menu of the day which also runs about 350 to 600 rupees per person. A decent seafood platter for 2 is probably around 2500.

The all inclusive resorts tend to have some of the nicest restaurants on the island so the prices they are going to be substantially higher. Another factor to look at is the price of drinks, even a bottle of water at a hotel is going to set you back quite a bit so you might want to rather look at the all inclusive instead of buying drinks at the hotel. If possible try find out what the price of drinks are at the hotel.

So where can we stay in Mauritius not on all inclusive?

If you are looking for a resort where you can specifically have the ability to go out look at Grand Gaub that area is good and Grand Baie is also good. Most of the resorts in the East and the South are going to be quite remote and far from any town.

Any other options for accommodation in Mauritius?

What I’ve noticed recently is the trend seems to be book 3 nights stay and the most luxury Mauritian hotel at an all inclusive, blow the budget, you deserve it 4 days of blissful holiday then plan it loosely. Try the 3 star hotels, the 4 star hotels even self catering and get out and explore at the parts of the island.
